About

Steve Hauser

Steve Hauser was born and raised in Redlands, California. In a family of four boys, he was the fourth Eagle Scout, in a church troop his father led for many years.

In 1968, at 21 and a student at UCLA, he started Troop 1135 in Willowbrook, between Watts and Compton, and led it for nearly ten years.

After UCLA and Loyola Law School he spent seven years as a Los Angeles Deputy Public Defender, then opened his own criminal defense, personal injury and civil rights practice in Santa Monica. Death penalty cases became a specialty, with a focus on adequate representation for the poor.

Since 1995 he has taught saxophone at Heart of Los Angeles. He serves on the board of Foster-All, which places foster children through churches. He lives in Thousand Oaks.

“At first, the scouts were nearly interchangeable dark strangers, but they have become part of my extended family, from ‘other’ to brother.”
